The Onion is a full bodied, Rubenesque vegetable settled onto a soap stone base that measures 1” x 4” x 4”. It is larger than life, a bit larger than the freshly harvested farmer’s market model that inspired this piece. The slightly textured outer sheath resembles the real thing. Cast in bonded marble, hand painted in acrylics.
Reclining solidly on the base this Onion may bring to mind Pablo Neruda’s poem Ode to an Onion, “belly growing round with dew in the secrecy of the dark earth”. Very lifelike, yet there are no tears when admiring this simple form on the kitchen counter. Instead celebrate the beginning of so many wonderful culinary masterpieces.
