At the end of summer, heirloom tomatoes populate the farmers’ market, tempting us to pick them up and take them home. Quirky, appealing and flavorful beyond imagination, heirlooms are a tomato lover’s darling. Each of these eight tomatoes were sculpted independently and stood as free-spirited singles on my work table. Then, as if a dating service took over in the night, they partnered up and became couples!
The pieces nest together, a dimple here embracing a curve there, comfortable in the presence of each other. They also stand alone, a single form representing the quintessence of summer.
They have enough style to strut down the center of the dining table. I imagine very small renditions as components in garden-inspired jewelry and much larger ones as familiar companions in the garden.
