A departure from my fruits and vegetables, the birds entered the picture because I wanted some lively action in my water-filled Avocado bird bath piece. The avian prototype, carved in wood, became more lithe and sophisticated as I refined it in clay, and then plaster.
The birds were sculpted to share a sophisticated yet primitive quality, though they each have their personal gestures. I was leaning toward the abstract, but with a fresh, almost childlike interpretation of this universal form.
This set of three song birds – ‘Dip’, ‘Stretch’ and ‘Wonder’ – comfortably fit into the palm of your hand or nestle on your desk. The cast bronze version is substantial yet creates a sense of lightness with the reflective quality of the material.
Each bird holds its own as a special guest, but an entire flock could converge atop of the sideboard in the dining room.
