Leek

When I grow leeks in the garden, I am struck by their stately presence. The leek is the most elegant of all the alliums.  As I began working in clay on this piece, I consciously exaggerated all of the elements, especially the writhing mass of roots and the broad shouldered, overlapping foliage. The slight twist in the torso gives the leek a sense of animation and athleticism that makes me think this handsome, vertical vegetable could wander off on its own.

The leek's smooth linear form reflects its self-confidence. It can be seen standing about in your sunroom, dancing around in the garden, or gathering with your guests at the next dinner party, providing good company and playing the role of the knowing listener.
